Bugsy

TALK ABOUT A CUTIE- This little dog is super sweet and she loves life so much. Bugsy is about 1 yr old, she is not crabby at all and she has a very calm and pleasant nature. Her coat is thin with a little length to it which is where we get the idea that she may have some Pekingese in her.  Her body shape is similar to that of a pug too so combining the 2 breeds made sense. Whatever she is tho, we just love her. Bugsy likes to be outside and does not want to be a couch potato. She likes laying in the sun and running around with her ears flapping. She will make a great family dog or a companion for someone that will spend lots of time with her, take her places and give her a pretty big life. Just because she is little she still wants to be active. Her adoption fee is $130.00 and that includes her recent spay, vaccinations and a microchip. This a great little dog. Call or e-mail for info and an appointment.

Dozer

Dozer is a super guy, one of our favorites here. He is a stout little dog, very handsome and friendly. His legs are short and his body is wide so it makes him extra cute. Dozer is going to make a fine companion for an individual or a family. He is kind with other dogs and he loves people of all ages. This boy is very sensitive to your desires, he learns very quickly and loves to please. Dozer needs some work on the cats yet, but with some patience and time I think he will be fine. He is about 3 yrs old and he weighs in at almost 50 lbs.  Dozer likes to ride in the car, he loves to come in the house and he is just overall a wonderful guy. His adoption fee is $110.00 and that includes his neuter, shots, worming and a microchip. Come and meet him and you will not be disappointed.

Molly Brown

MOLLY BROWN IS A LOVELY young dog, she is about 3 yrs old and she is beautiful inside and out. Molly Brown is a pretty high energy dog, she likes to stay busy but she always will choose people time over anything else. This dog has been passed around a lot so we have to get it right this time. She does well with other dogs, she is a pretty good team player and her work with cats is coming a long well. She is spayed, and weighs in at about 60 lbs.She is a pretty good sized girl and should do well with lots of exercise and a dog friend or two will help too. Her adoption fee is $130.00 and that includes her spay and a microchip. Molly has lots of try and will make a wonderful companion. She also likes to ride in the car, wonderful dog.

Challenge

I’d like to thank all of you who have supported Fur and Feather Animal Assistance through your gifts and time and money. We’re planning a big project that will enhance the lives of the animals. It will be installing a much-needed fence around the perimeter of 15 acres. Inside the 15 acres includes all dog pastures and bunkhouses, cat and kitten trailers, around our house, and the horse barn. This will give us another layer of security to keep the animals safe and will allow more socialization for dogs that could be out with the general population if they didn’t like to run, and run, and run. Keeping everyone safe and happy on Fur and Feather property is our first priority.

In order to do make this project happen we need your help.  Every dollar counts and iGive is giving you the opportunity to help Fur and Feather by signing up with iGive (the details are given below). iGive donates $5.00 to us for every new iGive member who signs up and makes a purchase through an iGive store by NOVEMBER 12, 2013.Going forward, iGive stores donate a percentage of your sale to us.  If you shop on the internet this is a great way to help us at no cost to you. Thank you for your support of Fur and Feather Animal Assistance!

Pookie ready for adoption

POOKIE is a very sweet boy, about 4 yrs old in Fall 2013, neutered and ready to go. He will make a wonderful watch dog because he pays attention and loves to be involved in everything that is going on. Pookie weighs about 60 lbs and he has a little more filling out to do. This boy had the genetic testing done so we can be sure about his breeding. The other dogs seem to like him as he has a good energy. He has been fostered in a home so he knows all about that. The cat thing may need some work, he  has been kenneled a lot so his environment is a big deal to him. This dog will make a very good family dog, he is good natured and loves life. His energy level is medium so regular exercise will suit him fine. The wrinkles of the Shar-Pei don't show up in Pookie but his personality and body style do. His adoption fee is $110.00 and that includes his neuter, shots and a microchip. Very nice dog.

Yogi goes home

What wonderful news!  Some of you have seen Yogi, the beautiful, red Chow that has been living here for around a year.  His family hit hard times but things are getting better now.  Brittany came to get Yogi today and we are so happy for him and for her.  Here are some pictures from today.

Socorrofest

Here is a note from Troylyn about the Socorro Fest last Saturday.  Thanks to all who participated.  It looks like it was a lot of fun!

Hi Laurie,

We raised $231.92 at Socorrofest on Saturday. My Helpers were Melisa Torrez, her daughters Charli (the older one in neon green) and Nicole (the younger one in neon green), Viviana Rosero, and Kim Royle. Oh! and of course Dulce (White) and Zeke (golden). Here are some photos.

Open House -- Oct 2013

We had a great open house.  There were about twenty-five people. It was good to see some faces that have been here before and some new faces.    This was a good opportunity to show people around.  We are delighted to say that we had four adoptions.  One cat moved to Albuquerque.  The other cat and two dogs are now living here in the Pie Town area.  We hope to see the animals and their new families once in a while.  One of the fun things that happened was that both Simon and Lolita were adopted.  These two small dogs arrived together and ended up getting adopted by different families on the same day.  My first picture is of the two of them.
Lolita_and_Simon_Aug_11_2012
SIMON ADOPTED AT OPEN HOUSE Jeanie adopted Sally and Simon is now a companion.  Here are notes from Simon and Jeanie.   Simon just sent you an e-mail. I am the luckiest person in the world, he is a real charmer. Thanks to everyone at Fur & Feathers. j
Simon says that Miss Sally is jealous of me. The kitten, Maxmillion, and Peanut (the older cat) adore me. I love my new home, and have my own bed, stuffed toy and place on the big people bed at night. I am allergic to some of the dried weeds in the yard though. I am going to make Miss Sally stop being so silly, she did give me kisses this morning so I'm making progress. Bet she is my best friend by the end of the week. Keep you updated later..Simon
Well, Simon is really in his element. He barks and puts up a fuss when I leave for the office in the mornings. He tries to grab my pant leg, which has me laughing. Did he go with Brad a lot on errands? If so I might take him a couple of times when I'm not going to stay at the office long. I adore him and Sally is giving him kisses, sparingly, but she is getting better. It is very peaceful and my "critters" are the cutest and bestest of them all. Many thanks for filling my home with so much joy and love...Jeanie

LOLITA ADOPTED AT OPEN HOUSE
Lolita_and_her_new_sister_frostie_Oct_21_2013
Lolita is doing well. The first day she was scared. Frostie was very jealous. She is off leash now. She is always on the couch or our laps. I think Frostie is a little scared of her which isn't bad for her.

KITTY BOO AKA KITTY A BOO ADOPTED DURING THE OPEN HOUSE AND MOVED ALBUQUERQUE. This was the first time Barbara came to FFAA.  She found a wonderful companion.   Kitty Boo has been wonderful. He slept most of the ride home and is fitting in nicely with my other animals here at home. He doesn't appear to have much interest in going outside but the pet door is there if he decides he wants to sun on the porch.

OSIRIS aka HAMLET THE MAINE COON CAT ADOPTED AND LIVING IN THE PIE TOWN AREA
We were all very busy at the open house. Alexandra came to pick up one of our t-shirts and brought us a rooster named Mardi Gras that she needed to find a home for.  I didn’t get a picture of him.  Sarah was there and told Laurie that she needed a rooster so he went home with her that day. Sarah is one of our workers. Mardi Gras will have a good home at Sarah’s .  Finally, Alexandra adopted our Main Coon cat. Alexandra changed Hamlet’s name to Osiris.  She said it is an ancient Egyptian God and he looks the part.

Elizabeth has been adopted

We only had Elizabeth for a couple of weeks.  She has moved to High Rolls which is near Alamogordo.  She has a new sister, Morgan, a Shih Tzu. They were playing together in the office.  Elizabeth is taller than Morgan because she is a Shih Tzu mix.

Oakley is ready for her family

OAKLEY is a very sweet and very smart gal. She is about 9 months old, spayed and ready to go. This is such a nice age for training them into what you want them to be. She is a little demure around the other dogs, not a tough guy at all and yet she loves to play with everyone and doesn't back down. Oakley is so pretty and good natured that you can't help but love her. She is not real high energy either, quieter than most of this breeding. Her adoption fee is $130.00 and that includes her spay, shots, worming and a microchip. Very nice puppy.

Gigi ready for adoption

GiGi is a really exceptional little girl, she is about 3 yrs old and  weighs in at around 8-9 lbs. She is long legged tho, very pretty and very well balanced. GiGi is not afraid of life, she is somewhat assertive and confident without being yippee or pushy. She will make a great companion for an individual or a family as she also likes kids. Her adoption fee is $130.00 and that includes her spay, vaccinations and a microchip. This gal is very special.

Elsie is ready for adoption

ELSIE IS a beautiful young lab puppy, about 5-6 months old. She has the typical lab personality, all love and
personality. She loves to learn new things and will make a terrific family dog or a companion for an individual that has lots of time to spend with her. Elsie is good with the cats and she truly loves everyone. Her adoption fee is $130.00 and that includes her spay, worming, shots and a microchip. This is a wonderful pup.

Marlin is ready for adoption

MARLIN IS A VERY SWEET GUY, your typical Rottweiler personality with a real love for people. We think he is 6-7 yrs old and he seems to have had a pretty tough life. He has not been here very long but we have had him neutered, he has been wormed and he is starting to fatten up and smile. Altogether he is in good shape. Marlin is not one of the big guys, he will probably be about 75 lbs when he fills out. This boy is not good with cats but he is very friendly with other dogs. So far he is spending his days with several other dogs and he does quite well. He is good in the house and will happily sleep all night on his bed The adoption fee of $110.00 includes his neuter, vaccinations, worming and a microchip. Marlin really just wants his own person to hang out with, his exercise needs are moderate and he will love you forever. Make an appt to come meet him and you will be very glad.

Elizabeth is ready for adoption

ELIZABETH IS a very sweet little gal, about 3 yrs old, quiet, sad and reserved. She lost her family very suddenly in a terrible way and I know it has been very hard on her. She loves to be held and just hang out with you. So far in the short time here at Fur and Feather we haven't seen her coming out of her shell, I just know there is a funny and happy little gal in there somewhere. When these guys suffer such a loss we always hope that their new family will come rather quickly. She needs lots of TLC and joy to come into her life. This is a very beautiful little girl, spayed and healthy. Her adoption fee of $130.00 will also include her vaccinations, worming and a microchip. Come meet her and you will not be disappointed.

Hurray For Purina!
A special thank you goes out to Purina for providing us with dog food and cat food last month. Purina called Laurie in July and said they had pet food for us. Ken, Brad, and Clay sprung into action and headed to Purina's Arizona facility to pick it up. Purina donated lots of food and what a happy sight that was when they rolled through the gates. Purina has generously donated to us in the past and every time we are grateful for their contribution. Thanks Purina - you rock, and thanks to those of you that donated food while we were waiting for this life saving event.

Beauty Tip: Coconut Oil

My friend Steve here at Fur and Feather is a border collie/herding dog who has been suffering from a serious skin condition since he got here. Laurie was told that using organic coconut oil topically and orally, might help. Well it did! Laurie told my mom Deb about it as well, and she has been using it on her skin and hair too with fantastic results. For more info about the uses for coconut oil go towww.coconutoilfacts.org.

A Successful Summer Raffle
Kathy Knapp of Pie-O-Neer
We held our First Annual Summer Raffle on Saturday July 20 at the Pie-O-Neer Cafe in Pie Town. The raffle was part of Fur and Feather's pet food drive for the animals living at their sanctuary. Brad Beauchamp and Clay Schumacher of Fur and Feather conducted the selection and Kathy Knapp owner of the Pie-O-Neer Café drew the winning tickets. The winner of the grand prize Uberti 45-70 Lever Action Rifle (Sharps 1874 replica) was Byron Labelle of Albuquerque. Mike Rawl, owner of the Good Pie Café in Pie Town, won the dulcimer and Cole McKinley of Quemado won the Indian beaded buckskin jacket. Congratulations to all three of them!
Clay Schumacher very generously donated the Sharps 1874 replica rifle, Kathy and Stanley from the Pie-O-Neer the Indian beaded buckskin jacket and Don Deaett the dulcimer.
Kathy, Stanley and especially Megan (also from the Pie-O-Neer Cafe), worked hard and organized the spaghetti dinner on May 4 at the Community Center in Pie Town. They ran the dinner dance, dessert auction, and raffle that evening. All sharing desserts and dancing to Megan's band had great fun.
The proceeds from that evening and from the raffle helped Fur and Feather feed and care for their animals last winter and spring through June and July.

Ella's "New" Story Ella on car ride home with new family

Pictured is Ella on her way home with her new family. Ella was one of our seniors. With only three legs and limited mobility (she proved us wrong). We thought she might have her forever home with us. That's why we're here - to provide or find forever homes to all animals that come to us. Ella's person spotted her on the Adopt-A-Pet website and decided to meet Ella here at the sanctuary. One cold, cold day in January her person drove all the way from Flagstaff, Arizona to Pie Town. Long story short, Ella left with her new family and began the most amazing chapter of her new life. Judging from the photo above, you can see she couldn't be happier. Ella's new mom (a veterinarian - lucky Ella!) wrote the following to us:
"She's incredibly loyal to me, and I have faith that she would go to the end of the world to take care of me if she thought it necessary.  Fortunately, the situation has been me taking care of her instead.

I've used Ella as a story of hope and inspiration for friends and clients about no matter how many times life puts you down, or how long you have to wait, eventually things can still come your way",

This is just one of many reasons why we dedicate so much time and care all of the animals that come our way.
Thank you to all of the new "parents" that have adopted from us for sharing your lives and hearts with your new companions.

A Happy Girl Reunited with Her Family by Sharon Bostick

Some of you may know that FFAA works with the American Kennel Club and their Companion Animal Recovery program (AKC CAR).  We enroll all the tags on our animals-even those that already have a microchip when they arrive here-with AKC CAR In the past, we have had several dogs lost and found and returned to the family quickly.
Here is a great story about a dog being lost and found recently. It turns out that Valentina decided to go for a walk and went to the neighbor's yard.  When the neighbor spotted Valentina in his back yard, he let her in the house and she immediately jumped on the couch and into his lap. He is new to the neighborhood and didn't know Valentina.  He read the 800 phone number for AKC CAR on Valentina's yellow identification tag and called them immediately.  They telephoned Laurie and she asked me to follow up.  I got out Valentina's family's contact information and I called both the gentleman that had Valentina and the the family.  It turned out she was right next door and returned immediately.  Such a happy ending for everyone.

I'm sending this to encourage everyone to implant a microchip in their animals and if you do it through us to be certain to give us updated contact information whenever there is a change.  Also, make sure that the animal wears their yellow id tag.  Of course, an animal can be scanned any time but in this case that wasn't necessary because the gentleman just read the phone number and her microchip number on her tag.

The AKC Recovery Program is a great way to keep your pets safe.

Katie Adoption and an Update

KATIE ADOPTED August 30, 2013  We are delighted to tell you that Katie has been adopted.  She has been here for quite some time.  This reinforces that there is a family out there for all the deserving animals.  Katie is the large Labrador mix  in the pictures.   It was cute to see that Katie and Patty sat in the back seat of the car all the way home.  Here is the first update we got right after Katie got home.
The ride home was great, she is such a sweet and wonderful dog, I am just soooo excited that we were able to find her. We got home about 8:30 p.m., she got out of the car and roamed the garage. she is apprehensive about the stairs so I put water and a blanket at the bottom, will sleep on the couch and be there when she decides to come up. It will take time so much has changed for her.

Janis and I are just so proud of what all of you do there, we both said you could see how happy and well taken care of the dogs were. We so enjoyed meeting all of you too! thank you for all the pictures, what a great day we had and what a treasure we brought home. Thank you so much and I will definitely keep you updated on our progress with Katie!

UPDATE:
Yes we will keep the name Katie.  Love it.  We are settling in, she does not like the tile and hardwood floors.  I ordered a runner yesterday so we can put in the hallway so she will feel comfortable walking back and forth, for now, it is a lot of coaxing but the only time she needs to be with me in the back is in the evening while I am knitting/watching TV and then for bed.

I moved myself from upstairs to the spare bedroom so we could be on the same level, she does not yet like the stairs…. All will work out in time.

We take 4-5 15 minute walks a day which of course, she loves and finally I will exercise!  J  All is going very well and I just love her to death!!  She does seem happy with me.

Thank you again for everything, I will update you as we grow.

Henry Update

Oakley on left, Henry on Right
Henry is doing well. I've got an appointment with the vet tomorrow, to get Henry's nails trimmed and to, generally, get him set up with a new vet. Just took him for a ride with me to the grocery store after a walk with both Oakley and himself. Oakley was not very cooperative during the walk so he didn't get to go on the ride to/from the store.

Henry and Oakley get along quite well. They can wrestle for 45 minutes straight. As soon as one of ém may cry out, they both stop and are almost apologetic to the other.  Though, I noticed some scabbing at the base of Oakley's ears. So, I've curtailed their wrestling for now. The scabbing, I believe, is unrelated. But, the wrestling certainly affects it. Yesterday, I bought some ointment, of sorts,
at Petco.

I've attached a couple of photos. You may have already seen one of them.

Will give you another update soon.

Take care.
Craig

Jonny Update

One quick story.  Monday, I went to the vet here in Las Cruces to get my heart worm medicine refilled.   On the other side of the room, checking out, was a neighbor.  I tried to speak with her, however, she didn't recognize me at first.  As I watched her, she was very distraught.  Come to find out she had brought he long time companion in to be "put down".

On my way home, I stopped by her house to say how sorry I was to learn of her loss.  She asked me to take all the dogie things she had.  I did.  She put a dozen or so toys into a box and I brought them home.  Set the box down in the house and went about my normal choirs.  An hour or so later, when I pass by the box, the toys were spread out all over the room and guess who was examining each and every one of them -- Jonny.

Now, for the past several days,  I pick up the toys & return them to the box.  Jonny then proceeds to pick them out one-by-one and to play with them for a few moments.  I had never experienced this behavior in the past and find it quit amusing.  As a scientist, I am curious to understand what is his criteria for selecting the toys.  So far I see no pattern!

I am very happy to support Fur & Feathers since I very much agree with your mission.   I hope to continue support in the future.   Lulu , Jonny & I are hoping to make it back to Pie Town in 2 weeks for the up-coming festival.

Hope to have more stories later...

Best Regards,

Bob Rader

Henry was adopted

HENRY ADOPTED AUG 24, 2013  The picture taken on the leash is just before he left and the others are from Craig.  Henry now has Craig plus another dog and a cat as companions.

Thank you for sharing the photos. They look great! Thank you both, as well, for inviting me to Fur and Feather Animal Assistance. I couldn't resist keeping an eye on Stewart that was following me out of the property. We made it home safely, as did the pies!  (Craig bought two pies at the Pie O Neer) I've attached a few photos - one from the trip home and the other, just after Henry entered my back yard, and, his newfound home on the couch. I tried once removing him, but couldn't resist his cuteness after going there a second time. Hey, he had a long day. haha     I will be in touch next week, with an up date of how things are progressing.

Thank you!     Craig

Sherpa Update

SHERPA UPDATE  (Sherpa is the black Shepherd)

Hi there! We adopted Sherpa two winters ago and just wanted to send an update. She is such a happy girl these days! Had become an excellent ball fetcher, loves the water and her best friend Rommel. Thank again and thank you for the hard work that you all do!

I’m sending this to encourage everyone to implant a microchip in their animals and if you do it through us to be certain to give us updated contact information whenever there is a change.  Also, make sure that the animal wears their yellow id tag.  Of course, an animal can be scanned any time but in this case that wasn’t necessary because the gentleman just read the phone number and her microchip number on her tag.

This is a day to celebrate!

Saturday, September 14 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Fur and Feather will be holding an Open House at our sanctuary in Pie Town.
The public is invited to come out and learn about our rescue mission and rehabilitation efforts for abused and unwanted animals.
Meet our rescued dogs and cats ready to be adopted and have some fun!
There will be refreshments, a craft table and give-a-ways.
For directions email us at furandfeatheranimalassistance@gmail.com or call 575-772-2661
Pet food, cat litter and monetary donations are always welcomed.
Fur and Feather Animal Assistance is a 501(c)(3) charity.
While in Pie Town, you may want to stop in at the Pie Festival which is also on September 14. It starts in the morning and runs until some time in the afternoon.
There will be lots of vendors, lots of food and especially home made pie.  Both of our restaurants will be open that day.
There are pie eating contests for children and adults. There are games for children and even a Horn Toad race. There will probably be horse shoe games.
We always elect a Pie Festival Pie Queen. In the evening, there is usually a dance. During the dance, they auction off the pie contest winning pies.

Johnny Update August 2013

Things are going great with Johnny after almost a month. He has adapted 100% and seems to love it here in the southern part of the state. We go out every morning and some evenings to run & play. Sunday, Lulu & I took Johnny to the Rio Grande near Anthony. He immediately jumped in and went to the other side (about 300 yards). Well we couldn't let him have all the fun so we also walked across to the other side (the river is bone dry this time of the year). There is a bike & walking trail along the river and we walked, Johnny ran, (figure 8's) for about a mile, then returned. He was ecstatic to run into the high green grass along side the trail and to explore this area. As with most dogs, he would run out ahead of us, then check back then head out again. Good exercise for us all! He has decided he is my shadow. He follows me around everywhere I go. When I'm at the computer, as now, he is laying at my feet under the computer table. He likes to get in my lap when I'm relaxing in my recliner, stretch out and go to sleep. He reminds me of my cats from a long time ago, except he is 40 pounds heavier. I think it's great!
Johnny checked in at the vet at 47.5 lbs. I am hoping to get his weight up to about 50. I want to have him build some more muscle mass in his hind end. I'm sure with all the exercise it will happen soon.

Best Regards,    Bob, Lulu & Johnny

Lost Dog reunited with her family

Here is a good story with a happy ending.  Someone here in northern Catron County contacted Laurie about a beautiful German Shepherd that was found and seemed to be lost.  When we got her she didn’t look like she had been lost for very long so we were hoping to get her reunited with her family.  We didn’t get any word until today.  The family didn’t think there was a chance of finding her and had not put out any signs about her being missing.  Finally  they found out that Isabel was at FFAA and contacted Laurie.  They picked Isabel up today(7 Aug 2013).   Isabel was delighted to see her family.   It is such a joy to have a happy ending.

Johnny Updates for July

JOHNNY UPDATE JULY 20,  2013

We introduced Johnny to a bath this morning. He wasn't quite sure about this thing, but, he finally made it through. Then he immediately went out to the back 40 to take a doggy bath in the dirt. Went out later to get some more food for him. he is adapting very very well to his new surroundings. He is an incredible dog. Really impressed and quite very happy. I'm especially happy with the way he takes to Lulu -- this is GREAT! Early afternoon we all went for a stroll around the neighborhood.

I will keep Johnny close around & in the house and on a leash for some time till he gets fully and completely adapted to his new environment. No problem in the back yard as it is well fenced. In addition to the rock wall I installed cattle panels to keep Rex from jumping over the wall in the beginning. Johnny, however, seems to sense that this is his new life. He appears (I know it's only been 1 day) to be adapting quickly and well. I am just so impressed with him and can't thank all of you enough for raising such a wonderful animal.

I will try to write more next week and include some pictures of his new surroundings.

Best Wishes For Now,                Regards,     Bob

Tuesday July 23, 2013

Four days and all is going fantastic. What a marvelous dog you raised in Johnny. He has taken to being an indoor/outdoor, but mostly indoor house dog. He has been doing great & much surpassing any expectations we could have had for a dog. I am so very much impressed. I think Johnny feels the same towards us. He has adapted well and seems very very happy.

Took him out this morning to one of the irrigation canals near the Rio Grande and we were able to go without the leash. I thought it would take another week or so, however, he told me this morning he was ready! He enjoyed running and exploring along the canal. Even taking a dip or two. I was beginning to think he didn't like water after the bathing experience on Saturday. However, he showed me wrong, he showed me he was as much a dog as any dog -- enjoying a cool dip in the well pumped water running in the canal at this time of the year. He knows and responds very well to his name. I had only a very slight hesitation to let him run, but he came back quickly when called. I then knew he was ready to expand his universe.

After his run this morning we went to the feed store to stock up on dog food and I saw a squeaky dog toy. Bought it for him -- he loves it! He has been attacking it all afternoon. He really likes to make it squeaks. I knew he was ready for a toy when I saw him this past Saturday. He found a mouse in the house and attacked it & played with it -- I only wish it hadn't been from the computer!

He stays by me all day. At present I am at my computer writing to you. Johnny is under the computer table sleeping at my feet. I noticed last Friday at your place he liked to go under the bed. Well he likes it here as well. Rex used to live under the bed, I have it slightly elevated to allow this to happen. Johnny now has decided that he likes being beneath the bed. I put back the rug I had under the bed when I had Rex. Now it's a bit more comfortable for him and easier for me to maintain. During the night he still prefers to sleep on his special blanket on the floor over by the TV. He sleeps well all night and seems to wake up about 4 or 5 in the morning. Not a problem as I am an early riser also.

My camera battery gave out on me this morning and needed to be recharged so consequently I don't have the pictures I promised. Should have some next time I write. He is so cute and I love when he experiences something new. His half folded ears pull forward and he gets this very cute inquisitive look on his face. He seems to love everything. I am so happy to have him but realize that he was the same when he was with you. All I can say is thank you so very much for raising such a wonderful dog from that tiny puppy. Please know he will have a wonderful life and experience (for us both) here in Las Cruces.

Best Wishes & Regards,
July 29, 2013

Just a quick update for Johnny.

He is doing very very well. He is adapting well and loves being a house dog. He does have something about 4 AM in the morning -- he feels that is the time for all of us to get up, go out and play -- UG! It starts as a gentle nuzzle or lick of my hand, then it becomes verbal and if I still don't respond it goes to a full bark, but only one! What a card he is! He has also become a real lap dog and I am reminded of your writing about putting him on your shoulder when he was little. When I sit down in my recliner he is quick to ask permission if he can join me and the answer is usually yes. He then jumps up on my lap proceeds to get as comfortable as possible and goes to sleep.

We are going out every day and he is now enjoying being able to run around the fields near the house as we walk. All the time checking back with me then going on to explore more things, then checking back again. He was so happy Sunday, he was running, at close to top speed, very large circles around Lulu & myself as we walked in a pecan orchard near the house. Then there's the grazing! He loves to graze on the grass. Fortunately I have a large patch in the back yard for him. Then there's the canal & ditch water when he gets hot -- could he possible be part sheep & part alligator?

Scooter Update

SCOOTER UPDATE JULY 30, 2013

Scooter and I are getting along fabulously, enjoying the summer. He is so well behaved, lots of fun, and everyone just loves him. He's got "treasures" buried in the yard already which he checks on every morning. He is so patient with me while I'm working my long shift and is ready for our cuddle time when I'm done. He loves our car trips, morning walks, and I'm so happy he is part of my family and household.

Thanks again for bringing us together! Maggie

DENNIS UPDATE JULY 29, 2013

He gets anxious when we try to walk Dougie separately, or when he knows I've gone out to walk the neighbor dog. I have to get the leash out of the closet. That's what alerts him. However, when we are at home, either both or just one of us, he is quite content to just relax. He likes to play in the morning, and tries different ways to entice us. We get such a kick out of it when he starts to play ball by himself. He tosses it around and chases it, then he lets it go in front of one of us and just looks at it until one of us picks it up and starts to throw for him.  He gets prettier every day, and we call him Brown Sugar as a nickname.    Debbie
